1 FED

A silver coin with darkened oxidation in areas. At the bottom of the coin is the top of a chillum, up from which rises a plume of smoke in the form of a snake. On the chillum’s edge is the year: “1976.” Left of the snake, three dots (Christiania’s symbol) are seen; and to the right, the inscription: “1 FED.”

Back then, up in Electric Ladyland, Bilbo came home one day with a heavy plastic bag. He emptied its contents on the floor, and out rolled the first 1 FED coins: “Here you go my friends, there are three for one hundred!”
Published on the occasion of the exhibition 1 FED by Det Kosmiske Hierarki, this publication brings to light the latent 1 FED Christiania coins (1976–2021) engraved by Vagn Sorento Dichmann. The exhibition and book are on view at Den Frie, Copenhagen, from Feb. 25 to May 29, 2022.
