1 FED offers the first comprehensive presentation of christiania’s 1 fed coins. little known to those outside the commune, in 1976 an unnamed group of people established freetown christiania’s own, independent currency. the coins, equal in value to a gram of hash (literally ‘1 fatty’), feature among christiania’s early efforts at independence from the danish state. for 45 years, vagn sorento dichmann (1944–2021) would mint coins rich with symbology and depictions of daily life in the free state. from det kosmiske hierarki’s thorough documentation, familiar and fantastical scenes play out in the book: viking ornament blends into psychedelic abstraction, owls and frogs smoke pipes while confrontations erupt with police, and sites like pusher street and loppen appear alongside dragons, dogs, punks, and jesters. in gathering, documenting, and describing these coins, det kosmiske hierarki provides a compelling view into christiania, “a testimony of a world that can’t and won’t be described.” the publication was produced as a work in and de facto catalogue for the exhibition 1 FED, presented by det kosmiske hierarki at copenhagen’s den frie udstillingsbygning, february 25 to may 29, 2022.
